About the project

Our team created a sequence of illustrations for a manuscript written by researchers working in the field of Biomedical Engineering and Design Production. Their team were working on an exciting new robotic medical device to target blood clots in the body.

Our Process

Understanding the science

First we start with research and try to simplify the research into an easy-to-understand sequence of steps. Our team reviewed the manuscipt draft and the CAD models provided by the client and worked with them to develop an easy-to-understand diagram.

Round 01 - Rough Sketches

We always begin with rough concept sketches to ensure we’re aligned with the client’s vision and science from the very start. These initial sketches are shared for review and feedback, allowing the client to guide the direction early on. During this stage, we also address any questions that arise from our research and initial concepts, helping to clarify details and ensure accuracy before moving into final linework and colour.

Round 02 - Tight Sketches

We then moved on to refining the sketches in line with the client’s feedback, carefully incorporating their changes to ensure the visuals meet both their technical requirements. This stage is highly collaborative, allowing us to fine-tune anatomy, perspective, and procedural accuracy while maintaining a clear and engaging visual narrative. By iterating on the sketches at this stage, we ensure that all stakeholders are aligned before moving into the final rendering phase. This is key to saving time, reducing revisions later in the process, and laying the groundwork for a polished, high-impact final product.

Round 03 - Final Illustration

Once the refined sketches are approved, we take on board any final client feedback and move on to completing the full-resolution illustrations. At this stage, we focus on rendering accurate anatomical details, applying lighting, texture, and colour to bring the visuals to life.

About the project

For this project, we created a detailed, step-by-step medical illustration sequence of an aortic aneurysm stent placement procedure. The goal was to visually communicate the complex surgical intervention in a clear, accurate, and engaging format suitable for both professional and educational audiences.

Working closely with our client, we illustrated key stages of the procedure. The illustrations highlight key anatomical landmarks, device positioning, and the transformation of the vessel post-deployment.

The sequence was designed for use in a scientific journal paper.

About the project

Our client was looking for 3D visualizations of their benchtop super-resolution microscope for nanoimaging, which can see individual molecules in living cells down to 20nm. The client wanted to showcase their products’ sleek, compact appearance whilst also showcasing its multiple applications.
They wanted to explain how super resolution imaging works and how exciting fluorophores produces a super-res image. They also wanted showcase their clinical applications and how they do single particle tracking.

The assets we created for the medical device animation were repurposed for the client’s website. When working with startups, we prioritize return on investment by ensuring the assets we produce are versatile and deliver maximum value across multiple applications.

We also used the images in the client’s product brochures, helping to create a cohesive visual identity across all their sales and marketing materials. This unified approach ensures they present themselves in the strongest, most professional way when going to market.

About the project

Our team developed a 3D patient-focused animation that explains the intricate process of how we hear and highlights how genetic variants can impact hearing. The animation walks viewers through the anatomy of the ear, demonstrating how sound travels from the outer ear to the brain and identifying the points where genetic mutations can disrupt this process.

The animation also explores how targeted therapies can address these genetic variants, offering potential solutions to restore hearing. Our goal was to create an accessible, visually engaging, and scientifically accurate narrative that empowers patients with knowledge about their condition and treatment options.

Our process

Research and Scientific Understanding

The first step in our production process is thorough research to fully understand our client’s science story and the background science related to the topic. This ensures that our visuals and animations are both accurate and engaging.

Because of the complexity of the cochlear anatomy, our team conducted sketchnotes to problem solve and better understand the key structures in this anatomical region.

Black and White storyboards

Our team begins animation production with black and white storyboards to help us problem solve important on-screen text and visual elements to help tell the science story effectively. We have a few rounds of black and white boards with our clients to obtain their feedback.

3D asset and scene development

After the storyboard was approved and finalized, our team moved on to building 3D scenes. We utilized the client’s existing cellular models where possible and created additional assets from scratch to ensure visual consistency and scientific accuracy. This preparation phase was essential in laying the groundwork for a seamless animation process.

Animation Round 01

In animation Round 01 our team blocks out all motion graphics and 3D animations in time with temporary/scratch voiceover. The 3D elements are renderd in greyscale. This provides our clients with an opportunity to see everything in motion for the first time. At this stage we look for timing lock on the animation.

Style frames

During the greyscale animation phase, we provided still image style frames to explore various color and style options for the models. These frames allowed us to experiment with figure opacity, label design, and molecule colors, ensuring that the final look aligned with the client's vision and maintained scientific clarity.

Before moving into the full-color animation phase, we rely on our clients to provide feedback on the style frames. Their input helps us refine the visual approach and ensure that the final animation meets their expectations and scientific requirements.

Animation Round 02 and 03

In animation Round 02 we implement the client’s valued feedback notes and begin full colour animation production on the 3D elements. The motion graphic elements are refined futher and we deliver a near final animation with temporary/scratch voiceover and music.

We provide this near final animation for the client to review and sign off for profesisonal voiceover recording.

We then conduct a professional voiceover recording session with a voiceover artist and implement the final voiceover with a clean sound mix.

We then deliver the animation for final delivery!
